Pakistan has set free a top-level al Qaeda prisoner who spent years guarding and fighting alongside Osama bin Laden, according to two senior Pakistani police officials, who tell CBS News Amin al-Haq was not a “key player” in the terror group, and “had no information of great value”.

“Eventually there was nothing that could be used to keep holding him in custody,” said one of the officials, both of whom spoke to CBS News’ Farhan Bokhari on condition of anonymity.

British daily The Telegraph was first to report the release on Thursday. Their report also cites a senior Pakistani security official, who told the paper al-Haq was “arrested mistakenly, therefore, the police failed to prove any charge of his association with Osama bin Laden and the court set him free.”

Al-Haq’s release raises more questions about Pakistan’s commitment to tackle Islamic militant groups which operate within parts of the nation with near impunity.

Relations between Islamabad and Washington have gone from bad to worse to dismal in recent weeks, with American officials making a series of accusations that Pakistan’s security services are directly linked to terror groups – the most vitriolic being Adm. Mike Mullen’s assertion that the deadly Haqqani terror network is a “veritable arm” of the ISI spy agency.

But as she stepped out of the car, her ramrod posture and black earpiece suggested something was amiss. She surveyed the car park with an eagle-eyed intensity. A wealthy client climbed out of the vehicle and Ms Chen, along with another female colleague, briskly escorted the businesswoman into a nearby building.

“There are times when women are stronger and better than men,” says Ms Chen. The 21-year-old is one of the growing numbers of females choosing to join the macho world of bodyguarding. It is estimated that there are 3,000 loosely regulated bodyguard companies competing to provide personal security.

‘Having a sister’
Among China’s burgeoning wealthy elite, women make up a third of the country’s millionaires. With resentment building over the widening gap between rich and poor, many of these women are now seeking personal protection. Successful entrepreneur Wen Cui founded Guodun, a personal security business, to cater to this market. She branched out from the more sedate world of running a chain of kindergartens.

Her idea for female personal protection arose from brutal experience. She was mugged twice while on business trips. “Having a female bodyguard is a bit like having a sister,” she explains. “They can watch out for you.” Wen Cui says she has received a fresh order to train 30 female bodyguards.

Xie Xingjiang Bodyguard
She says that female clients prefer women to their often burly male counterparts as they draw less attention – and scandal. “If you’ve got a female bodyguard then you share a room,” she says. “People will think that she’s your secretary. But if it’s a man, well, then people might get the wrong impression.”

Overall, Ms Wen’s company is training 60 recruits. They are put through their paces by former soldiers at a training camp located on a military base. During the six-month course the women – nearly all graduates – learn a whole range of skills including kung fu, surveillance and first-aid. They even receive etiquette classes so they can behave appropriately around their clients.

A rewarding career?
Xie Xingjiang, 19, is among the latest recruits having swapped figures for fists. She trained as an accountant but always wanted to be a bodyguard. Despite pressure from her parents to get an office job, Ms Xie is now fulfilling her dream. Wen Cui spotted a successful business opportunity amid growing demand for female security. “I used to watch a lot of action movies when I was a young,” she says. “I wanted to be like them.”

For those who make the cut, there is money to be made. The firm charges about $300 (£188) a day per female bodyguard (the employees can earn $100 per day.) A gold-plated package, including six bodyguards and two vehicles, can cost as much as $3,000 a day. Gan Dongxia, a wealthy investor, often uses the service. She says she feels safer with personal protection. “Some of my friends have been involved in disputes and they’ve been kidnapped,” she says. “It can be dangerous here. So when my business grew, I felt I needed to be protected by bodyguards.”

“It’s also good to have them around as people show you more respect,” she adds. China may be a country that is growing richer every year. But anger is building amongst those missing out. With the wealthy elite increasingly on guard, business will continue to be brisk for China’s female bodyguards.

Edexcel B Tec Level 3 Diploma in ‘Close Protection & Operations’ which includes 3 day HSE First Aid (This is a requirement for the SIA Close Protection Frontline Licence application).

The Control Risk Management Solutions (CRMS) Frontline Close Protection Operatives course far exceeds the minimum requirements in order to qualify for the SIA Licence. Our instructors come from Military, Special Forces and Specialist Protection backgrounds. Our course consists of both theory and practical exercises to put you in the mindset of a field operative.

The Close Protection course covers the following modules;
Working as a Close Protection Operative – this module in itself contains a lot of differing information. You could be protecting a footballer, a singer, a politician or a prominent businessperson. These variables in themselves have a lot to do with the risks you will have to account for.

Threat and Risk Assessment – A bodyguard would be largely superfluous if the person they are protecting could stay still at all times. When moving from one place to another there are countless potential risks, and the Close Protector must be ready for each of them.

Surveillance Awareness – You may only have moments in which to make your move. Identifying when the time is right and the coast is clear are vital.

Operational Planning – One benefit to guarding a prominent personality is that their days are usually scheduled in advance. This enables you to plan with military precision how they can get to each appointment with minimum risk and hassle.

Law and Legislation – Being aware of the law and how it governs what you can and cannot do is important, as is an awareness of what other people can do to get your charge’s attention.

Interpersonal Skills – Often being brusque with a pestering fan or heckler can aggravate things, so it’s worth learning how to defuse situations sensibly.

Close Protection Teamwork – The job of protecting an individual becomes vastly more practical when two or more CP work together.

Reconnaissance – knowing the alternative routes available between A and B can be helpful if a scrum of paparazzi turns up on C

Close Protection Foot Techniques – walking any distance from place to place with a protectee in tow is ill-advised, but if you must, you should know the tricks of the trade.

Route Selection – picking an alternative, possibly circuitous route might just keep your charge away from those prying eyes.

Close Protection Vehicle Techniques – how to get them into the car, out of the car, and how to drive past crowds without putting your celeb at risk.

Search Procedures – cameras are small these days, so you can hide one just about anywhere. This makes your job harder.

Incidents and Dilemmas – in a nutshell, crisis management.

Venue-Based Security – seeing to it that no-one can hide themselves somewhere and spring a nasty surprise on your charge, or hide anything else that could make the evening tricky.

Communication and Conflict Management Skills – largely self-explanatory. Basically, see to it that only the right people get to talk to your celebrity.

Call today and find out how you can achieve qualifications that can and will enhance your career within the Close protection sector.
